just ask

Hi Reader...

I was on a live webinar the other day.

Someone I used to know was on it too.

We'd met through an online networking group...back when I was a matchmaker (if you didn't know that...that's a story for another time. lol!).

But here's the thing...we'd never actually met in person.

We talked on the phone once. Over 15 years ago.

She didn't know I was on the webinar...until she spotted my name in the comments.

So she reached out to me on Facebook.

"Are you on this webinar?!"

Turns out she lives in Colorado.

And just happened to be driving to LA this week to visit her mom.

So I went out on a limb.

I asked if she wanted to grab lunch while she was in town.

She said yes!

And now...we're getting together next week.

Here's why I'm telling you this…

If you want to make new friends...you have to put yourself out there…and just ask!

I've had to do this so many times in my life.

When I moved to New York at 32. And when I moved back to California at 55.

Every time...I had to be the one to reach out.

Was it awkward at first? Absolutely.

But I didn't let it stop me...because making new friends mattered more to me.

And I know it's not always easy to do.

Maybe you’re shy. Or feel awkward. Or you just don't know what to say.

Believe me...I get it.

But here's the truth...

If you don't ask...the answer will always be, "no".

So this week...go out on a limb.

Send the text. Make the call. Ask the question.

You never know where a simple "want to grab lunch?" might lead...

Maybe a new friend?!

And always remember...life is better when you share it with friends.

With love,

Hi Reader... I don't know about you...but nobody warned me about this part of midlife… An injury. A surgery you didn't plan on. A couple of weeks ago, I texted my cousin. I asked her if she'd ever had a knee replacement. Because I found out I might need one. And I wanted to hear how it went…what to expect…anything I should know. As it turns out, she never had one. But here's what she texted me back… "When you have your surgery I'll come stay with you and help you, until you can manage on your...

Woman in midlife smiling and talking with a new friend, showing how to make friends as an adult

Hi Reader... Yesterday, I was on the phone with a close friend. She was telling me about her daughter…who's in her 20s and having a really hard time making new friends. My friend asked me… "How do you do it? You make new friends everywhere you go." And honestly…I had to stop and think about it for a second. Because it's not something I plan. But here's what I told her… I talk to everyone and anyone. Wherever I am. Whether it’s at the grocery store. Waiting to board a plane. Standing in line...

Midlife Friendships - Two women friends

Hi Reader... A couple of weeks ago, I was wrapping up a fun summer vacation in NY. A girls' beach trip out to Montauk...then a few days in New York City. I was really looking forward to the last few days of the trip...catching up with girlfriends, good food and great conversations. At least…that was my plan. But the next morning...I woke up sicker than sick. Coughing. Chills. A fever. Normally I'd just shrug it off as the flu. But not this time. There was a legionnaire's outbreak spreading...
